(Whole Jamaican Pepper)

Allspice berries are also known as Jamaican pepper because of where it commonly grows and it's appearance which is similar to large peppercorns. Allspice is also known as Pimenta and akubaba in parts of Eastern Europe.

This is the highest-grade allspice for culinary use.

It is Perfect for Pickling, Mulling, Marinades, and Potpourri.

Use of Allspice:

Allspice is sometimes added to peppercorn blends, and is used as a substitute for pepper in some countries such as Jamaica (i.e. Jamaican pepper).

This spice is an important ingredient in many barbeque, Jamaican jerk seasoning, and rotisserie recipes.

Allspice was used by the Aztecs to flavor chocolate.

Allspice is used to produce a synthetic form of vanilla, called vanillin, which is used in cooking, perfumes, soaps. This extremely versatile spice is even used in the production of anesthetics and preservatives.

Allspice is a common ingredient in Potpourris & crafts.

Since recent medical studies have shown allspice to have high concentrations of antioxidants we might soon see it being sold as a dietary supplement.

Allspice Cooking hints:

Grind, or crush just prior to use.

Its flavor is similar to a combination of cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon.

Allspice can be used to replace cloves in many recipes. But substituting allspice is not recommended, although cloves could be used in a pinch.

Try it with roasted meats, vegetables, in broths, gravy, for pickling, and baked goods.

The Allspice Tree:

This versatile spice is the dried berry of a small tree, Pimenta Dioica also known as allspice, and Jamaican pepper. It belongs to the Myrtaceae family along with clove trees, evident in the two spices similar flavors and sometimes uses.

The Allspice tree is a tropical evergreen plant that can grow to the height of a three-story building. The little white flowers of this small tree develop into berries which are pick, dried, and sold as Allspice & Jamaican pepper. Both the leaves and the berries of this tree are very aromatic.
