(Sweet Loral leaves)

Bay leaf bud

Bay leaf is very fragrant and adds a wonderful flavor to all kinds of foods!

Use of Bay Leaves:

Whole bay leaves are often added to dishes while they are cooking and then removed before serving. This is done because the leaves are slightly toxic. Bay also can be ground prior to use.

Bay is good with all kinds of foods: vegetables, Soups, meats, sauces, and in pickling! Bay is especially good in dishes cooked a long time such as stews and soups. Bay releases it's flavor gradually during the cooking process.

To make bay leave scented soap, add a small amount of liquid from a pot that has had bay leaves boiled in it, to melted Neutrogena soap (or similar soap) and allow cooling in desired mold. Try adding a whole leaf or two to the mold before the soap cools to add a decorative touch.

The branches of the bay plant are also used to make crafts and wreaths. They have been used for this purpose since Roman times.

The Bay Plant:

The Bay plant goes by several name including Sweet Bay, Sweet Loral, Bay Loral, and even Poet Laureate in ancient times. These names are fitting because bay (Laurus nobilis) is a member of the Loral Family, (Lauraceae) along with Cassia cinnamon and avocado trees.

Bay Loral PlantBay is an evergreen tree that normally grows 10-30 feet tall and is a native of the Mediterranean. The bay leaves are dark green, 2-4 inches long, and symmetrical. Bay's flowers bloom in clusters and develop into dark blue berries. Only the leaves of this plant are suitable for culinary purpose.

Growing Sweet Laurel (Bay):

Bay is a small evergreen tree, which is a sensitive to cold weather; it will need to be taken inside for winter in some climates. A large and well-fertilized pot will be necessary for this small tree. Bay needs lots of sun and water in well draining soil (or pot). Like most fresh herbs, fresh Bay has an excellent flavor and aroma.

The branches of the Sweet Laurel (Bay) plant are fairly flexible, making them suitable for craft projects as well as training into ornamental shapes. by bending them into a particular position, tying, and leaving the branches in that position until they stay naturally. This kind of manipulation of a plant's natural shape by training and trimming is called topiary.
