Ginger's unique and even hot flavor is a favorite spice in many Asian counties.

Cooking With Ginger

Ginger powder has pungent hot & spicy flavor. It's aroma is subtle and spicy.

Ginger is used to flavor all kinds of foods. It is included in foods such as cakes, ginger cookies, gingerbread, pies, jams, candy, beer, and ginger ale soda in the United States.

Ginger is often added to savory dishes such as meats, vegetables, rice, tofu, marinades, sauces, curry pastes, stir fries, and soups in Asian countries. This fiery spice is also an essential condiment served with Japanese sushi and in Chinese Sichuan cooking.

For something different try matching ginger with apples and bananas.

Ginger powder is a perfect addition to marinades.

Add ginger to dishes at the beginning of cooking for a milder flavor, and at the end if you would like a more pronounced effect.

Try cooking powdered ginger root in hot oil to subdue it's spiciness while bring out the spice's complex flavors.

Ginger Tea
Add just add 1/8 of a teaspoon ground ginger powder too three cups of boiling water and let steep for 2 minutes.
The Ginger Plant
The ginger plant, Zingiber officinale is a member of the Zingiberaceae family. This herbaceous perennial is most likely native to the Middle East, or Southeast Asia.

Ginger Plant Flowers

The spice ginger is not really a root at all, but an underground stem, called a rhizome, of the ginger plant. It's underground stem is fleshy, starchy, has a strong aroma, pungent flavor, and is often a light yellow color. The ginger rhizome slowly grows just blow the surface of the soil and sends up leafy foliage. This foliage growing on a above ground stem that can grow to over four feet tall.

The ginger plant flowers by sending up a strange looking cone on the end of a stalk. This cone then opens up in numerous pink ginger flowers. These flowers are edible and used in some Asia dishes.

Growing Ginger Root

Growing your own ginger plant is fairly easy to do because it is a relatively forgiving plant. The biggest draw back is the time it takes for ginger to mature.

It will take approximately one year before the plant can be harvested for the ginger rhizomes. At this point, the underground rhizome that we know as the spice ginger, should be thick, fleshy, and packed with flavor!

Since ginger plants like warm temperatures and plenty of humidity, they will need to be brought indoors during cold weather. The plant will appreciate being place by a humidifier and an occasional misting. Ginger is cultivated in tropical and semitropical areas around the world.

Benefit of Ginger

Clinical trials of ginger root have shown the spice to reduce the symptoms of both motion sickness and prenatal nausea. Other studies also indicate ginger may have anti-inflammatory properties, improve memory function, lower cholesterol, and even be a antioxidant. These claims however need more research to confirm their validity.
