Bulk flax seeds — Linum usitatissimum golden and brown seeds rich in omega-3 fatty acids

Flax seeds (Linum usitatissimum) are small, flat, oval seeds from the flax plant — one of humanity’s oldest cultivated crops, grown for both its fiber (linen) and its seeds for at least 10,000 years. Today they are valued as a nutritious food ingredient with a mild, nutty flavor.

Varieties

Brown flax seeds — slightly earthier flavor, most common commercially.

Golden (yellow) flax seeds — milder, more neutral flavor; preferred for baking where color matters.

Both varieties have essentially the same nutritional profile.

Nutrition Highlights

Flax seeds are an exceptional source of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA, a plant-based omega-3 fatty acid), lignans (phytoestrogens with antioxidant properties), and soluble and insoluble fiber. To access the nutritional benefits, grind flax seeds — whole seeds pass through largely undigested.

Culinary Uses

  • Baking — add whole seeds to bread doughs, muffin batters, and granola for texture and nutrition
  • Flax egg (vegan egg substitute) — 1 tablespoon ground flax + 3 tablespoons water, rest 5 minutes = one egg equivalent for binding in baked goods
  • Smoothies — 1–2 tablespoons ground flax added to any smoothie
  • Oatmeal and yogurt topping — sprinkle whole seeds for crunch or ground seeds for nutrition without texture
  • Crackers — flax seeds form the basis of several seed cracker recipes

Storage

Whole flax seeds keep well in a cool, dark place for up to a year. Ground flax seeds are highly perishable once milled — store in the freezer and use within a few weeks.
